Courier App Development for Food Delivery & Dark Kitchens

Courier App Development for Food Delivery & Dark Kitchens

We build rider apps for couriers and dispatch systems for operations managers β€” part of the same connected FoodTech stack we build for restaurants, dark kitchens, and delivery platforms.

Real-time sync with the kitchen, live geolocation on every route, and an offline mode that keeps working when the signal drops mid-delivery.

It's built around the specific mechanics of food delivery: bundling multiple orders from one kitchen station, syncing a courier's status with the kitchen the second it changes, and keeping deliveries moving when a driver loses signal for a block or two β€” the kind of detail a general-purpose logistics app doesn't account for.

If you're after the customer-facing side β€” ordering, tracking, notifications β€” that's covered on our delivery solutions page. This one is about the app the courier actually carries, and the dispatch panel running behind it.

We built and released the Sizl rider app in just 2.5 weeks.

Courier App Solutions We Develop

We build the rider app for couriers and the dispatch system for managers as two separate products living inside one monorepo. Each is designed around its own role, and because they share a codebase, a feature shipped for one usually reaches the other within days.

Rider / Courier App (iOS & Android)

Built on what we shipped for Sizl Riders, our courier apps cover a driver's full shift: phone-number-and-SMS login, a "Ready to Go" queue a courier joins at their kitchen station, push notifications for new bundles with one-tap pickup confirmation, and an order list showing customer names, addresses, and delivery notes for every stop. Drivers close out a delivery either with a tap for hand-in-person handoff or a photo for contactless drop-off.

When the connection drops, those photo confirmations save locally and sync automatically the moment service returns β€” a real scenario on Chicago's delivery routes, where cell coverage isn't always reliable. The customer's map updates with the courier's live position for the whole trip. We build it in React Native, cross-platform for iOS and Android, with OS-level work for push notifications and background geolocation on iOS specifically.

Dispatch & Admin Panel

The kitchen side of the same system β€” an operations dashboard built for the manager running the floor. Orders move through visible stages (confirmed, cooking, ready, bundling), so nobody on shift is guessing what's next. A bundling view pairs ready orders with the couriers currently checked in at the station, and a map groups nearby addresses so one courier can cover several stops in a single trip.

Bundle assignment is manual today, with automation on the roadmap, and a courier's "Ready to Go" status reaches the dispatch panel the instant it changes on their phone. The panel syncs with your POS and ordering platform, so orders never need re-entering by hand.

Customer-Facing Order Tracking

A live map showing the courier's real-time position, updating automatically as the delivery moves. It connects to the ordering platform and the rider app through the same shared codebase, so the tracking screen a customer sees never drifts out of sync with what's actually happening at dispatch.

This piece works alongside our delivery solutions and online ordering platform pages.

Monorepo Architecture:
All Apps in One Codebase

The customer app, rider app, and support tool all live in one monorepo. UI components, authentication, and API integrations get built once and reused across every product, so a feature added in one place usually reaches the others in a day or two.

That's how Sizl Riders went from idea to a standalone, live app in 2.5 weeks β€” it reused what already existed in the customer app instead of starting from scratch. We wrote more about why this approach pays off for growing digital ecosystems on our blog.

Ideas to Enhance Your Courier Operations

Once the core rider app and dispatch panel are live, these are the upgrades that tend to pay off next.
  • Automated Dispatch & Route Optimization

An algorithm assigns bundles by courier proximity and current load instead of a manual call β€” the logical next step after Sizl's current manual dispatch.

  • Earnings & Performance Tracker

Couriers see their earnings, rating, and delivery history in the app, so pay is never a mystery.

  • AI-Powered Route Suggestions

Routing that accounts for live traffic and delivery order, not just straight-line distance.

  • Multi-Brand Dispatch

One shared courier pool serving several brands out of a single dark kitchen, dispatched from one admin panel.

  • Driver Ratings & Incentives

A rating system with built-in bonuses to cut turnover among couriers.
